Blepharoplasty

Enhancing eyelid surgery

Eyelid plastic surgery is used to correct an excess of skin, fat and flabby muscle around the eyelid allowing a better appearance, sometimes even bettering a problem in the area It mustn’t though by any means affect the functioning of the eyelid. The most common questions regarding this surgery are:

1)
· Q IS THERE A RIGHT AGE TO OPERATE THIS AREA?

A: There is no right age but yes the right opportunity. This opportunity is determined by the presence of the defect to be corrected, which can occur at any age.

2)
· Q: IS THERE VISIBLE SCARRING AND WHERE IS IT LOCALIZED?

· A: If the skin around the eyelid area is very thin, scarring tends to be hidden in the folds of the skin. However you need to wait for around 3 months for the scar to mature. From the first few days it is possible to hide any blemishes, redness etc with a light makeup.

3)
· Q WHAT TYPE OF ANESTHETIC IS USED?

· A Local anesthetic with prior sedation.

4)
· Q IS THERE ANY PAIN AFTER THE SURGERY?

· A: Generally not. But if there is It can be treated by using painkillers

5)
· Q:IS THERE SWELLING, AND IF SO, HOW LONG DOES IT LAST?

· A: Swelling varies from patient to patient. There are some patients who by the fourth or fifth day have a totally natural look. Others will attain this result after the eighth day. But the first 3 days after the surgery are the most likely to have swelling. Dark glasses may be useful in this phase, and cold compresses. Only after the third month is it extremely minimal.
·
6)
· Q: HOW LONG DO I STAY IN HOSPITAL?

· A: 3 to 6 hours.

7)
· Q: HOW LONG DOES THE SURGERY TAKE?

· A: Normally around 1 hour.

8)
· Q: WHAT ARE “THE PURPLE MARKS” THAT CAN APPEAR?

· A Nothing more than an infiltration of blood below the skin due to the trauma of the surgery. This however will not result in future problems or complications:

9)
· Q: WHEN WILL THE PERMENANT RESULTS START TO SHOW?

· A After the first month, although soon after about a week, we should see about 30% of the result.

10)
· Q: WILL THE EYES REMAIN COVERED AFTER THE SURGERY?

· A: No, but we recommend that you put cold compresses for a few minutes, a few times a day to avoid heavy swelling.

11)
· Q: AT THE END OF THE DAY, IS IT WORTH IT?

· A: If you are well aware and confident that the Surgeon can give you what you require and desire then it is well worth it. However it is worth thinking about the fact that eyelid surgery won’t give you a general face-lift. Many patients hope to see total transformation by only having eyelid surgery. The Surgeon can only improve the pre-existent defects. Crow’s feet, even when operated on, will never disappear.
